Fishing Report January 2024

Fishing Conditions

Temp (River): Average of 22ºC – 28ºC

Water Clarity: The water is a bit murky in the river section but is settling in front of Nkwazi Lake Lodge and is clear toward the mouth of the Dam.

Water Level: 80.88%

Rainfall: 77mm

 

Other Conditions: The Dam level has risen nicely and the water temperature nice and warm, making for good fishing.

Fishing Area: From Mpalane Bay, Crocodile Bay towards the railway bridge, in front of Nkwazi Lake Lodge, Pump Station, the bay as you pass the KZN Wildlife campsites, Elephant Bay in 2 - 8m of water and towards the mouth of the river where it enters the main Dam continue to be the best fishing spots.

 

Fish Caught

 

Tiger Fish Sizes: Tiger Fish caught during the month ranged from 1kg – 6kg. The largest one of 6kg was caught on sardine.

Total Tiger Fish: The fishing is great at the moment, with an average of 711 Tiger Fish caught off the Pongola Game Reserve boats. Sardine and chicken heart cocktail proved to be the most successful bait this month, also trolling with Rapala’s in the cleaner water was a good method.

 

Barbel: A few Barbel and bream were caught while fishing for Tiger Fish; using sardine, chicken livers and chicken hearts.

Lure Colour of the Month: No specific colour stood out as the most successful this month.
