Fishing Report January 2025

Fishing Conditions    

                     

Temp (River): Average of 18ºC – 24ºC

​

Water Clarity: The water is fairly murky in places due to the increase in the river inflow as a result of the good rains received in the catchment.

​

Water Level: 82.15%

​

Rainfall: 189.5mm

​

Other Conditions: The Dam level increased a lot, to over 90% due to the good rains received, but has since decreased slightly as the Department of Water & Sanitation released some water from the Dam.

​

Fishing Area: From Mpalane Bay, Crocodile Bay towards the railway bridge, in front of Nkwazi Lake Lodge, Pump Station, the bay as you pass the KZN Wildlife campsites, Elephant Bay in 2 - 8m of water and towards the mouth of the main Dam.

 

Fish Caught

 

Tiger Fish Sizes: Tiger Fish caught during the month ranged from 1kg – 2.3kg. The largest one of 2.3kg was caught on sardine. Smaller fish were caught this month due to the influx of water from the river.

Total Tiger Fish: An average of 301 Tiger Fish were caught off the Pongola Game Reserve boats. Sardine proved the best bait this month, with chicken livers and hearts also working in the murky water.

 

Other Species: A few Silver Catfish and Barbel were caught while fishing for Tiger Fish; using sardine and chicken livers.

Lure Colour of the Month: Lures did not prove so successful this month in the murky water.

​
