Fishing Report May 2025

Fishing Conditions    

                     

Temp (River): Average of 18ºC – 20ºC

​

Water Clarity: The water has cleared, but there is some algae bloom caused by the vegetation that was covered by the rising water levels.

​

Water Level: 94.91%

​

Rainfall: 22mm

​

Other Conditions: The Dam level has increased again from last month, due to the water inflow being higher than the outflow. The level is expected to stabilise and then decrease again during the winter months. The water temperature has dropped but the fishing has still been good.

​

Fishing Area: From Mpalane Bay, in front of Nkwazi Lake Lodge, Pump Station, the bay as you pass the KZN Wildlife campsites, Elephant Bay in 2 - 8m of water and towards the mouth of the main Dam.

 

Fish Caught

 

Tiger Fish Sizes: Tiger Fish caught during the month ranged from 1kg – 3.2kg. The largest one of 3.2kg was caught on sardine.

​

Total Tiger Fish: An average of 992 Tiger Fish were caught off the Pongola Game Reserve boats. Sardine, chicken livers, chicken hearts and live bait were the best baits to use. Spinners had some success as well as trolling with Rapalas.

 

Other Species: Plenty of Silver Catfish and Barbel were caught while fishing for Tiger Fish; using sardine and chicken livers.
