Fishing Report March 2024

Fishing Conditions

                                                   

Temp (River): Average of 19ºC – 28ºC

​

Water Clarity: The water is murky in the river section due to the influx of water received from the good rains in the catchment, but cleaner towards the main Dam.

 

Water Level: 83.77%

 

Rainfall: 170mm

​

Other Conditions: The Dam level has risen nicely, with the good rains received during the month.

 

Fishing Area: From Mpalane Bay, Crocodile Bay towards the railway bridge, in front of Nkwazi Lake Lodge, Pump Station, the bay as you pass the KZN Wildlife campsites, Elephant Bay in 2 - 8m of water and towards the mouth of the Dam remain the best fishing spots.

Fish Caught

Tiger Fish Sizes: Tiger Fish caught during the month ranged from 1kg – 4.6kg. The largest one of 4.6kg was caught on sardine.

​

Total Tiger Fish: The fishing was once again excellent during March, with an average of 923 Tiger Fish caught off the Pongola Game Reserve boats, all catch and release as is our policy. Sardines and chicken heart mix/cocktail was the best bait this month. Chicken livers, spinners and live bait also worked well.

 

Barbel: A few Barbel and bream were caught while fishing for Tiger Fish; using sardine, chicken livers and chicken hearts, as well as live bait on occasion.

Lure Colour of the Month: There were no specific colours that proved more successful during this period.

 

Important News: Fishing for Tigers continues to be a popular activity, with even the youngsters having a great time!
